TBPK Undip Explores Cutting-Edge Marine Biotech with Prof. Ooi Chien Wei: Unlocking the Power of Microalgae Biorefinery

Jepara, 31 October 2025 – The Study Program of Fisheries and Marine Business Technology (TBPK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), Diponegoro University, held its Adjunct Professor Program featuring international expert Assoc. Prof. Ooi Chien Wei (H-index: 42) from Monash University Malaysia. The program took place from 27 October to 7 November 2025 and included a series of lectures, scientific discussions, academic consultations, and collaborative research meetings.

The highlight of the event was a Public Lecture on 31 October 2025 at the Teluk Awur Campus in Jepara, attended by students, lecturers, researchers, and faculty representatives. The lecture focused on the theme “Microalgae Biorefinery: Recovery of Bioactive Compounds and Sustainable Marine Biotechnology.”

In his keynote presentation, Prof. Ooi delivered an in-depth overview of cutting-edge advancements in microalgae utilization as a source of high-value bioactive compounds such as astaxanthin, lutein, and fucoxanthin. He also discussed the latest bioprocessing technologies—including supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, aqueous two-phase systems, and ionic liquid–based innovations—highlighting their potential to improve extraction efficiency and industrial sustainability.

Prof. Ooi further explored the broader potential of marine biorefinery in supporting the development of healthcare products, cosmetics, nutritional supplements, and environmentally friendly biotechnologies. He also shared key examples of applied innovations, including biosensors, biodegradable bioplastics, and fisheries by-product valorization.

The Head of TBPK Undip, Dr. Eko Susanto, emphasized the strategic importance of this program in strengthening research collaboration and enhancing academic capacity within the department.
“The Adjunct Professor Program not only expands our understanding of modern bioprocess technologies but also opens new possibilities for long-term collaborative research between Undip and Monash University,” he said.

During his visit, Prof. Ooi also conducted scientific writing mentoring sessions for TBPK lecturers, discussed international publication opportunities, and explored potential joint research initiatives in marine biotechnology and sustainable bioproduct development.

The TBPK Adjunct Professor Program is expected to serve as a catalyst for advancing academic excellence, strengthening global research collaboration, and positioning TBPK Undip as a dynamic, globally competitive study program in marine technology and sustainable bioproduct innovation.
